My mother very generously agreed to runs some errands with me today.  Our first stop was to pick up a wall mounted ironing board I’d purchased through Craigslist (you’ll see a makeover of it very soon!) and then we drove to a neighboring city to shop at their Walmart Superstore.

We’d planned to make it stop two of three, but after shopping there, we ended up buying some items we hadn’t intended to that were frozen so we headed home.

Bakery Desserts and Starbucks Coffee pairings at Walmart

It’s a good thing though, because we also picked up some Starbucks Willow (Blonde) Blend coffee and The Bakery At Walmart Sugar Free Sliced Lemon Creme Cake and we couldn’t wait to try it. My mom is not a fan of most of Starbucks’ brews, she finds them much too dark, and so we were really curious to have her try this new blonde blend made especially for coffee lovers like her.

While we were there we couldn’t help but notice all of the bakery items selected to pair with the coffee in the Delicious Pairings display. Since my mom has just been told by her nutritionist to consume less sugar, the Sugar Free Sliced Lemon Creme Cake was a perfect choice. It would pair beautifully with the coffee because of its citrus flavor.

I also picked up some frozen raspberries (sadly no fresh were available) to make a raspberry coulis sauce to turn the cake into one my my specialties – semi-homemade desserts!  I already had the rest of the ingredients I needed at home to make it into an easy sweet treat (see the recipe below).

Once home, we broke out the coffee and brewed it in our one-cup coffee maker with a stainless steel reusable filter. That allows us to use bulk coffee like the Starbucks in our single-cup coffee maker. We brewed up four cups working on trial and error until we got it just right.

We sat down and had a little tasting party. We were joined by my husband and our future daughter-in-law. We served up our freshly brewed Starbucks Willow (Blonde) Blend coffee and the Sugar Free Sliced Lemon Creme Cake with homemade raspberry coulis and whipped topping.

It was love at first bite. The tart lemon, sweet raspberries, followed by the smooth and light Willow Blend….simply heaven. The pairing was a success – each complimenting the other and never fighting for attention. It’s no wonder that our previously non-Starbucks drinker has now found a roast that’s perfect for her. So perfect in fact, the rest of the bag went home with her!

We ate every bite and drank every drop….some of us had more than our share :)

Did I need to add the extras to the cake? No, it was divine – moist, tart, delicious and such a nice complement to the coffee just as it was. But it certainly made it into a fancy dessert for our little party!

Are you a Starbucks’ drinker? What’s your roast and what would be your perfect pairing?

I love that. It’s simple enough…with ingredients that I can keep on hand and most of all – it contains raspberries :)
