Shiva Rea: Core Yoga Exercise DVD Review – No Crunches Way to Flat Abs
Shiva Rea mixes standard yoga poses with traditional exercises to create and energetic workout in her new DVD, Shiva Rea: Core Yoga. The centerpiece of this new workout routine are stretching and strength training routines to build up a strong core. This will give you the added benefit of helping you look leaner and stand taller with the added muscle and strength gained by completing the 7 yoga sequences.
While she boasts that there are no crunches necessary, that doesn’t mean this is an easy workout. Quite the opposite. There are some exercises and poses that are well beyond my capability, but it gives me something to work towards. Of the seven segments, four are focused on ab movements. Rea makes all the moves look simple with her incredibly toned body, amazing flexibility, and calm and soothing voice. She’s quietly encouraging and reminds us to breathe throughout the process as she explains the pose or gently reminds us which body part we should be lift, flexing, or stretching.
I would not say this is a beginner yoga DVD. It’s got some incredibly difficult moves for this overweight woman and there weren’t a lot of options mentioned for those, like me, who weren’t able to complete the task. Still, you’re encouraged to do what you can do and over time the movements should get easier. But it’s hard not to be a little envious when Rea completely flips the lower half of her body up and over her head – pretty impressive – and hard to recreate except for the fittest of students.
Rea filmed the DVD in some exotic and beautiful locations which adds some interest to the video. The DVD is set so that you can select segments and customize your workout however you wish – this allows you to focus more on one area or another, or just keep from getting bored with the same routine.
Rea has produced a great number of exercise DVD’s so if this one is too advanced, check out any number of her other routines which include yoga for new moms, morning stretch, and more.
