Feed Your Best Friend Better: Easy, Nutritious Meals and Treats for Dogs

Baked Parmesan Wontons, Peanut Butter and Banana Ice Cream, Blueberry Pancakes, Baked Apples, and Slow-cooked Chicken and Barley….all of these sound delicious, don’t they! Would you believe they’re recipes for homemade dog food?!? Yes! These delicious meals are made from human-grade ingredients so you can nibble along as well!

Feed Your Best Friend Better: Easy, Nutritious Meals and Treats for Dogs by Rick Woodford, the Dog Food Dude, is a complete tome. From start to finish he talks about dog nutrition, gives advice on what supplements you can make and those that need to be purchased, and helps you in determining the proper portion size for your dog to retain optimal health.

There are recipes for homemade dog kibble, special recipes for puppies, nursing dogs, dogs with cancer, and ill dogs as well as information on supplements that should be added to your dog’s food to be sure she’s getting all of the nutrients she requires.

The recipes go from seriously easy to those that require a little more work, but you’re rewarded with chemical- and preservative-free food for your best friend. An hour or so a week and your pup can be eating quality food for less than quality pet food costs. If you’re buying lousy food then yes, this is more expensive, but I’m a firm believer that good food means less coat, skin, and other health problems, so to me it pays for itself. If you must use a commercial dog food, Woodford takes a look at them and helps you find one that fits your budget but offers better nutrition.

The Dog Food Dude – Kong Stuffing Recipe Video

I haven’t tried any of the recipes but plan to soon. I’d definitely be making the Parmesan Wontons and I’ll be sharing them with the pups and who knows, maybe one of the pups will get a Birthday Beefcake for her next birthday. There are plenty of treat recipes and several for stuffing you Kong toys with something more nutritious than the junk that comes in cans.

A nutritional analysis of every recipe found in the Feed Your Best Friend Better is available on the Dog Food Dude’s website where it’s organized alphabetically and page numbers are listed so you can be sure you’re looking at the right recipe.

I’m loving the book and looking forward to making a few meals form my pups soon. Have you ever thought of making your own dog food?

I bet my dog would go nuts for these. I’ve made him little bits of grilled meat before and I just buy dog treats, but maybe I should give these a go.
