There are few movies I consider classics. For me a classic movie has to be one I can watch repeatedly and never tire of.  It also has to be a film that I discover another reason to love it every time I watch it. Maybe it’s my age, but “my” classics seem to all be from the 70’s and 80’s. Mel BrooksSPACEBALLS is on my list of must-own classics. Lucky for me, they just released a 25th anniversary Blu-ray edition!

Mel Brooks has made a name for himself over the years as a comedian, actor, produce, screenwriter, director, composer, and lyrist. His list of accomplishments is astonishing and he’s provided me with so many laughs over the years. It hardly seems possible it’s been 25-years since I saw SPACEBALLS in the theater (January 1987!). The humor isn’t for everyone – it’s definitely meant for people with an appreciation of slapstick humor and a love of comedy spoofs  – which I’m all for.

Nothing makes me giggle like a school girl more than when I watch this movie. Who couldn’t love Rick Moranis as the bumbling Dark Helmet and Bill Pullman (Lone Starr) as the adorable but clueless rouge?  Then there’s Daphne Zuniga as the determined Druish Princess and the late John Candy who plays his own best friend (Barf the Mawg) as a half man/half dog creature who’s Lone Starr’s copilot. Even Mel Brooks makes a cameo in the film as does Dick Van Patten, Dom DeLuise, John Hurt, Jim J. Bullock, and Joan Rivers.

If you haven’t seen this film do it. If you’re a fan of science fiction movies you’ll recognize the characters and story lines from Star Wars, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, and Snow White. They’re all fair game for spoofing and Brooks and his cast do a phenomenal job of going over the top.
