Ah, the freedom a man feels when he’s wearing a kilt – yep, it’s true; there’s nothing under that kilt but a man’s good intentions. How do I know? I got the info straight from a kilt-wearing manly man at the Disney • Pixar press event for their new movie, BRAVE.
But seriously, why a man would want a ridiculously thick wool skirt next to his nether regions is beyond me. That was just one of the discoveries I made during a how-to wear a kilt wearing session at the Disney • Pixar’s Press Day I attended a few weeks ago for the upcoming movie BRAVE. We watched as two handsome and charming fellows walked us through the stages of dressing in a kilt. There’s a lot of pomp and circumstances involved born from centuries of tradition and lots and lots of layers.

We also learned about the significance of the Tartan. The Tartan is the design used on the kilt skirts and every clan (family) has a specific one; all members in the same family will wear that same print. We also learned the correct term for the clothing pieces – for instance the small purse worn with a kilt is called a Sporran. It’s generally made from leather and covered in horse hair. I can be used to carry small weapons or your car keys.
What I found amazing about the film is that the folks at Pixar took all these minute details involved in dressing the Scottish Highlander and translated them to the animated characters. The animator’s actually dress the characters much like their human counter parts. They actually draw the clothing pieces onto the character in layers so that the final look drapes, moves, and shifts just like the real clothing would.

There are so many clans in the movie BRAVE and each is dressed to represent their family. I love how different and unique each costume is and yet it’s readily obvious who belongs to which clan.
I’ve seen the first 30-minutes of BRAVE and was impressed with the quality. I can’t wait to see the rest of it when BRAVE hits theaters everywhere on June 22nd!
Set in the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland, Disney•Pixar’s “Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to change her fate, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) andcantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane), unleashing chaos in the kingdom. When she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters), she is granted an ill-fated wish and the ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her resources—including her mischievous triplet brothers—to undo a beastly curse and discover the meaning of true bravery. Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and signature Pixar humor. Opens on June 22, 2012, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.
