TV Review: JANE BY DESIGN Delightfully Charming and Fashionable

Jane by Design on DVDI’m not even close to being a teenager. Heck, I’m actually beyond middle age. So there’s really no reason I ought to enjoy JANE BY DESIGN, a television show starring Andie McDowell (Shortcuts, Groundhog Day) and Erica Dasher (The Lake).  Having said that, I do and I adore it.

JANE BY DESIGN is a appealing story about a high school girl who applies for an internship at a prestigious fashion house in NYC, only she’s mistaken as the adult applicant for an executive assistant position. In a strange turn of events, she finds herself employed by one of the most challenging bosses since Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada.”  Only in this tale the girl, sixteen year old Jane Quimby, has to balance her high school existence with her completely new adult world of fashion and more importantly, she’s got to make sure they’re kept separate and secret from one another.

Jane takes on the ruthlessly competitive world of fashion magnificently and she handles her nightmare of a boss, Gray Chandler Murray, nicely. JANE BY DESIGN is amusing, charming, and totally unbelievable, but I’m OK with that. No background check? Nothing to prove her age? Sure she produces a fake ID, but still, I’d like to believe a teenager couldn’t be hired as an adult in today’s computer-driven world.

Nevertheless it is irrelevant given that the story is entertaining, the acting fantastic, and the behind-the-scenes look at the fashion arena is a kick. I absolutely adore Andie McDowell’s character.  I love her cold and calculated ways as she interacts with her assistant and with the other characters in the workplace. There are romantic pursuits, conspiracy, and suspense – everything you need for a superb season in addition to a excellent season finale.

If you’re a devotee of SWITCHED AT BIRTH, SUBURGATORY, or PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, you’ll likely really enjoy JANE BY DESIGN just as much as I do. If you’re currently an enthusiast of Jane and the gang, what’s your opinion? Will Jane be able to keep it a secret that she’s really just a teen? Which guy will she choose? And most of all, what bizarre fashion will be seen on the runway this season?

The summer premier of JANE BY DESIGN is June 5th.  It’ll air on Tuesdays at 9/8c on ABC Family.

I’ve tried to watch that one but it’s one of the few I couldn’t get in to. My 75-year old mother loves it though :)

      Thanks for the comment!
