Movie Review: Disney Channel’s GEEK CHARMING Charms

Geek CharmingDisney released the Disney Channel movie, Geek Charming (Two-Disc DVD + Bonus DVD + Best Friend Charm Set), on DVD today!  This fun movie stars ABC’s Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland (Haley Dunphy).  It’s a sweet movie based on the young adult novel penned by Robin Palmer (she also wrote Cindy Ella, Yours Truly, Lucy B. Parker: Sealed With a Kiss: Book 2).

Geek Charming is a family-friendly movie about friendship and self-confidence with a little teenage romance mixed in.  It looks at stereotypes and with the help of strong adult role models, the teens learn to overcome the limitations, and behave more responsibly.  But most importantly, they learn that holding themselves to higher standards may be difficult, but it makes them a better person in the end.  The movie is charming and intelligent and Hyland’s character, Dylan,  shows real change from the beginning of the movie to the end.  Her transformation is believable and she’s a more likeable character when she realizes she only needs to be herself.

It’s a great movie for teens and tweens and a perfect starting point for some discussions about stereotypes, bullying (although in the movie it’s mild and only through somewhat derogatory name calling), and even teen romance (kissing).

The Geek Charming DVD includes 10 episodes of Disney’s wildly popular Shake it Up! series plus a best friends charm. Rated G
