I made the commitment to myself to go organic and/or natural with every product I put on my body or in it almost 2 years ago. And I’ve tried not to be one of those preachy people who wants to scoff at the multitude of bad products people are using, but it’s really hard. Once you know how bad the chemicals are that we’re being encouraged to use are for us, it’s hard to not say something. Still, I know many people look at my way of life as being fringe, but it’s really not. It’s just getting back to the way things used to be. When we made most of the products that were used at home in the kitchen. You know, the way grandma used to live.
Still, I want to encourage those that I love to live a healthier lifestyle and I’ve always put practical things in their stockings, so this year will be no different. Only the items will be organic and/or natural to show them that it’s possible to make the change and not miss out on any of the modern benefits they think traditional chemicals bring them. This year in addition to the organic candy and treats I’m adding a Crystal Body Deodorant Roll On I purchased at WalMart in my mother’s stocking (see all the photos of my shopping trip here). I tried it a few months ago and it wasn’t for me, I’m still searching for one that works with my particular body chemistry. But since my mother doesn’t have the heavy duty need I do, this should be perfect. I want her to see that a natural deodorant can work as well as other commercial options. So why my mom? I’d like to keep her around as long as possible and as healthy as possible. Antiperspirant’s with aluminum (the active ingredient in most) have been found to possibly cause or add to breast cancer. A fate I’d like to avoid for both of us.
Why do I buy Natural/Organic?
For several reasons. First because it’s better for the people who are manufacturing the products. It leads to less exposure to deadly chemicals and helps them live better lives. Next because it’s better for me. In our country a product is on the market and available for use until it’s PROVEN harmful. So many people assume just because an item is sold over the counter it’s safe. That’s not the case. I prefer not to be a company’s guinea pig. I’ll stick with products that are as close to natural as possible with the least amount of intervention and the smallest amount of change.
Not convinced natural is better? Check out where your products are on the hazardous scale by searching for them in the EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. Here’s a link to the Crystal Body Deodorant Roll On’s page – it rates a 0 out of 10 which means it has the lowest hazard rating possible. Look up your deodorant/antiperspirant and see how it scores. My current antiperspirant is a 5 which makes it a high hazard with lots of potential carcinogens – I need to stop using it asap.
WalMart Has More in Store For Natural Products
While I was shopping I happened upon a few other natural items I didn’t realize WalMart was carrying! Brands I buy routinely for the kitchen, laundry room, and personal care items like toothpaste and many I have to make a special trip to a organic/natural specialty store for. In fact, I found my favorite natural dryer softener sheets at half off! Yes, I purchased all that they had on the shelf!
So, it’s the New Year…consider making the decision to learn more about natural and organic and consider the benefits to you and your family.
