REVIEW: CO Bigelow the Oldest Apothecary in America’s Body Care Products

I love C.O. Bigelow. It’s an online store that is a nostalgic look at the past with the convenience and creativity of a modern store. The website is for those of us who don’t live in New York City where C.O. Bigelow, the oldest apothecary in America, has a charming store in Greenwich Village. It’s at this location as well as their online  store where they still provide prescriptions, unique and unusual beauty products, healing remedies, and hard to find apothecary items much like they’ve done since their beginning.

C.O. Bigelow has been in the apothecary business since 1838 when it was founded by Dr. Galen Hunter. Originally called The Village Apothecary Shop, it was purchased by Clarence Otis Bigelow in 1880. Clarence renamed the shop to reflect his new ownership and after working alongside Dr. Hunter for a time, he took over the shop completely. In 1939, Willaim B. Ginsberg purchased the pharmacy from the pharmacist Bluestone who received it some time between 1922-1939.  Since 1939 there have been three generations of Ginsberg’s that have owned and operated the shop with it passing from father to son to grandson.

In its nearly two centuries of business, C.O. Bigelow has made it its goal to provide customers with customized service.  In addition, they want to product products that truly make a difference in the lives of their customers. They sell some of the finest skin and bodycare lines in addition to their own branded products.

C.O. Bigelow Village Perfumer Body Wash

C.O. Bigelow Village Perfumer Body Wash, a candle, and a magazine = bubble bath & relaxation time!

I had the chance to try several of their products.  What I liked is that they’re not tested on animals and they’re made in the USA.  Their bottles are cute and nostalgic and I love the way they look in my bathroom.

  • C.O. Bigelow Village Perfumer Hand Wash Rosemary Mint No.1526 – The scent is a mix of rosemary, peppermint,  and spearmint.   Price $12

  • C.O. Bigelow Village Perfumer Body Lotion Coconut No.1535  - Like rubbing a tropical island on yourself – a blend of toasted coconut and creamy coconut milk. $1

  • C.O. Bigelow Village Perfumer Body Cleanser Lavender No. 1525 – A soothing lavender fragrance that doubles at our house as a bath additive – it makes great bubbles.  $12

What I didn’t like are some of the chemicals and colorings used.  Since they contain ingredients I won’t use on my own skin, I put them in the guest bath for others to enjoy.   C.O. Bigelow’s does carry organic products, 236 products currently, from soap and make-up, to bath and body, and even mom and baby.  Additionally, some of their own branded products are now available in organic and I love that!

On my next trip to NYC the C.O. Bigelow store in Greenwich Village will be one of the places I visit.
