REVIEW: Joy Bauer’s Slimdown Workout – Skip It
You may recognize Joy Bauer‘s name or face. She’s a popular diet and nutrition expert for the Today Show (NBC) and she’s written several New York Times bestselling books. This is Joy’s first workout program and in it she features 2-20 minute workouts led by joy along with certified instructor Lisa Wheeler. This total weight-loss solution has several bonus features including Joy’s top ten tips for losing weight, advice on healthy snacks and diet-friendly meals.
Joy Bauer’s Slimdown Workout is old-school aerobics and like Kristi Yamaguchi’s fitness DVD, Joy appears to be along for the ride for name recognition only. I found the constant banter between Joy and Lisa a bit annoying and I longed to be able to mute their voices but retain the music. I find it especially difficult on the second play through to listen to them. It’s too bad, because there is some good information provided, but it’s mixed into constant accolades for each other which gets annoying.
The moves are easy enough for a beginner and can be made significantly more difficult for advanced users. Only light weights are needed but a mat would be helpful as well. This wasn’t one of my favorite DVDs and I won’t likely use it again. There are too many others that I’m more comfortable with. For a one-time use it was fine or next time I’ll mute the volume and use my new iPod nano to replace the music and non-stop chatter on the DVD. I don’t mind the moves, but I hate the banter. Adding my own music should help.
